Taiping

Taiping, my hometown, situated in the northwest of West Malaysia (Malaya). The town is situated on a coastal plain just west of the Bintang Range. It originated as a Chinese mining settlement in the Larut district, where large-scale tin mining developed in the 1840s. The town lies along the main western peninsular road and rail lines and also has an airfield.

Taiping is the first town in Malaysia to have a:

central market (1870), rest house (1870), Ammunition Dump (1870), Airstrip (1930), swimming pool (1870), the resident's residence (1877), court house (1876), Ngah Ibrahim fort (1913), Malay school (1942), English cirls school (1878), social club (1880), hospital (1880), lake garden (1880), prison (1885), telegraph office (1880), government office (1879), railway station (1885), museum (1883)...

On 1 September 1999, a set of stamps together with a RM2 miniature sheet were issued featuring Taiping. I remember going to Taiping post office on that day  to get the Taiping stamp-mark on my first day cover. Here is my two precious cups, produced by the Majlis Perbandaran Taiping (MPT).
